Understanding Supabase Edge Functions
Not every backend operation belongs directly in your frontend. Sometimes you need server-side logic for: API integrations Webhooks AI requests Payment processing Secure operations Custom business logic Supabase Edge Functions provide a way to run backend handlers.
Why Use a Function?
Suppose your application needs to call a third-party API using a secret key. That secret should not be placed in browser JavaScript. Instead, the frontend can call your backend function, and the function can communicate with the external service securely.
Functions and the Database
An Edge Function can also communicate with your Supabase database. This allows you to combine custom server-side logic with PostgreSQL, Auth, and other Supabase services.
Keep Secrets Private
Environment variables and server-side configuration should contain private credentials. Never expose sensitive API keys through browser-exposed variables.
Good Use Cases
Edge Functions can be useful for: Webhooks AI APIs Payment callbacks Email automation Data processing Third-party integrations
Hostwares currently lists the Deno-based Edge Functions runtime as part of its self-hosted Supabase stack. Use functions for logic that needs a secure backend execution environment instead of putting everything into the frontend.
