Build Live Notifications with Supabase Realtime

A notification system does not always need to wait for the user to refresh the page. For applications such as messaging platforms, marketplaces, support systems, and SaaS dashboards, instant notifications can make the interface feel much better.

Store Notifications

Create a notifications table containing information such as: User ID Notification type Message Read status Created time The database becomes the source of truth.

Listen for New Notifications

The frontend can subscribe to new notification records belonging to the current user. When a new record appears, the interface can display it immediately.

Protect User Data

Realtime does not replace database security. Your authorization rules still need to ensure that one user cannot receive another user's private notifications.

Avoid Unnecessary Events

A large application may generate many events. Only subscribe users to the data they actually need.

Combine Realtime With Normal Storage

Realtime tells the application that something changed. The database stores the actual notification. This gives you both immediate updates and persistent notification history.

Where It Helps

Live notifications work well for: New messages Order updates Team invitations Payment status Support replies Security alerts

Hostwares currently includes Supabase Realtime in its dedicated Supabase stack. The result is a notification system that can feel instant without repeatedly polling the server.
