Building a Multi-Tenant SaaS With Supabase
A SaaS application may have hundreds or thousands of organizations using the same product. The challenge is simple:
Each customer must see only their own data.
Start With Organizations
Create an organizations table. Then create a membership table connecting users to organizations. For example:
User → Membership → Organization
Attach Business Data to an Organization
Instead of storing only a user ID, many SaaS records should also contain an organization ID. For example: projects.organization_id This makes tenant separation easier.
Use RLS
Row Level Security can enforce organization-level access. The application should only allow a user to access records belonging to organizations where they are a member.
Add Roles
Memberships can contain roles such as: Owner Admin Member Viewer Policies can then reflect those permissions.
Test Tenant Isolation
This is critical. Log in as one customer and try to access another customer's records. The database should reject the request.
Scale Carefully
As your SaaS grows, review database indexes, queries, connections, and server resources. Supabase provides PostgreSQL and Row Level Security, making it possible to build this architecture around the database itself.
A properly designed multi-tenant model keeps customer data separated while allowing one application backend to serve many organizations.
