Supabase Backup and Restore Before Major Updates
Database changes are part of normal application development. Schema changes, migrations, upgrades, and data transformations can all introduce risk. A backup gives you a recovery point.
Know What the Backup Contains
A PostgreSQL backup may contain database structures and data, but your complete Supabase environment can include more. Consider: Database Authentication Storage Functions Environment variables Application configuration
Test the Backup
A backup that has never been restored is not fully proven. Test restoration in a separate environment when possible.
Before a Major Migration
Create a fresh backup immediately before the change. Record: Backup time Database version Migration version Application version
Keep Recovery Simple
If a migration fails, you should know exactly how to restore the previous state. Do not invent the recovery process during an incident. Hostwares' current self-hosted Supabase offering includes automatic backups and point-in-time backup capabilities as part of the stack. The most useful backup is one you can actually restore when you need it.
