Supabase Realtime for Chat Applications
A chat application needs more than a text box. It needs users, conversations, messages, permissions, storage, and realtime communication. Supabase can provide several of these backend components in one stack.
Basic Architecture
A simple chat application can contain:
Users → Conversations → Messages
Each message belongs to a conversation and a sender. The database stores the history while Realtime helps deliver new messages to connected clients.
Authentication
Users should authenticate before accessing private conversations. Your application can use Supabase Auth for login and user management.
Realtime Messages
When a user sends a message, the application stores it in PostgreSQL. Realtime can then notify other connected participants that a new message is available.
Security
Never rely only on frontend checks. Database-level policies should control which users can read or create messages.
File Attachments
If your chat supports images or documents, Supabase Storage can handle the associated files.
Scaling
As the number of simultaneous users grows, monitor: RAM CPU Database connections Realtime connections Storage
Hostwares' self-hosted Supabase stack includes Postgres, Auth, Storage, Realtime, and connection pooling. This makes it possible to build the main backend components of a chat application in one environment.
