Understanding Supabase REST APIs
One of Supabase's useful ideas is that your PostgreSQL database can become accessible through an API layer. PostgREST is a key part of that architecture.
From Table to API
Suppose your database contains: products Your application can use an API to read, create, update, and delete records according to the permissions configured for the project.
Why This Is Useful
You do not need to manually write a traditional CRUD endpoint for every table. The database schema and security policies become an important part of the API architecture.
Security Still Matters
Automatic APIs do not mean automatic permission. Your application still needs proper Row Level Security policies. For example, a user should not automatically be able to read every private record simply because an endpoint exists.
Think About Your Schema
A clean database structure becomes even more important when your database is directly exposed through an API layer. Use meaningful relationships and clear access policies.
Hostwares' current self-hosted Supabase stack includes PostgREST, API gateway components, CRUD endpoints, and Row Level Security. Supabase REST APIs can reduce backend boilerplate while keeping PostgreSQL at the center of your application architecture.
