Supabase RLS in Production
A frontend application should never be the only layer deciding which data a user can access. If a user manipulates a request manually, frontend checks can be bypassed. That is why database-level security matters.
What Is RLS?
Row Level Security allows PostgreSQL to decide which rows a user can access. For example, suppose you have: profiles Each profile contains a user_id. An RLS policy can restrict users so they can only access their own profile.
Why This Matters
Imagine a user changes an API request from: user_id = my-id to: user_id = another-user-id A frontend-only check might fail. A database policy can block the request.
Use Policies for Each Operation
Think about: SELECT INSERT UPDATE DELETE Each operation may require a different policy.
Test Your Policies
Do not assume the policy works because it looks correct. Test: User A accessing User A's data User A accessing User B's data Unauthenticated access Update attempts Delete attempts
Hostwares' self-hosted Supabase stack includes Row Level Security as part of the API/database layer. RLS should be considered a core security layer for production Supabase applications.
