Supabase Storage for Images: Upload, Resize, and Deliver

Building an Image System With Supabase Storage

Images appear everywhere in modern applications. Profile pictures, product images, blog thumbnails, marketplace listings, and user-generated content can all require image storage.

Upload the Original

When a user uploads an image, store the original file in a dedicated bucket. Avoid placing binary image data directly inside PostgreSQL.

Store Metadata

Keep useful information in your database: Owner ID File path Original filename MIME type Upload date Image dimensions

Resize for Different Screens

A large original image may be unnecessary for a small card on a mobile device. Generate appropriately sized versions when needed.

Optimize Delivery

Modern applications should avoid sending multi-megapixel originals when a smaller version is sufficient. Image resizing and format conversion can reduce unnecessary bandwidth.

Protect User Content

If the image is private, use private buckets and temporary access URLs. If it is public content, make sure that is an intentional product decision.

Plan Storage Growth

Image-heavy applications can consume disk space quickly. Monitor storage usage and consider lifecycle policies for temporary files.

Hostwares' Supabase stack currently includes image transformations through imgproxy along with Storage. A good image pipeline improves both application performance and infrastructure efficiency.
