Supabase with Nuxt: Building a Full-Stack Application

sowad sheikh··3 min read

Nuxt is a powerful framework for Vue applications. When you combine Nuxt with Supabase, you can build a full-stack application with a modern frontend and a complete backend service.

The combination can work for dashboards, SaaS applications, business platforms and customer portals.

The Architecture

A basic Nuxt + Supabase application looks like: Nuxt Application | v Supabase Client | +---+---+ | | Auth Database | Storage

The application can use Supabase for backend services while Nuxt handles the frontend and server-side application structure.

Database

Start by defining the application's data model. For example, an online booking application might have: users properties bookings payments reviews Supabase uses PostgreSQL, so you have access to a mature relational database.

Authentication

A Nuxt application can use Supabase Auth for: Registration Login Logout Password recovery OAuth User sessions After login, the application can show authenticated pages based on the user's session.

Protected Pages

Not every page should be accessible to every visitor. Examples include: /dashboard /account /settings /admin Your application can check authentication before allowing access. But frontend checks should not be your only security layer.

Row Level Security

Supabase RLS controls access at the database level. Suppose a user owns a booking. Your database policies can restrict access so users cannot simply modify another user's booking by changing an ID in a request. This is especially important for SaaS applications.

Storage

Supabase Storage can be used for:

User avatars Documents Product images Property images Attachments The database can store the metadata while Storage holds the actual files.

Server-Side Logic

Nuxt also provides server-side functionality. You can decide whether an operation should happen: In the browser Through a Nuxt server endpoint Through a server-side workflow Through Supabase The right choice depends on the feature.

Environment Configuration

Production configuration should be kept separate from local development. Your environment might contain values such as: SUPABASE_URL=... SUPABASE_KEY=... Keep secrets outside Git repositories.

Production Deployment

Once the application is complete, connect the repository to your hosting environment. Hostwares supports GitHub deployment, custom domains, SSL and deployment logs for hosted applications. Your Nuxt application can then connect to the production Supabase backend through its configured environment variables.

Self-Hosted Supabase

If you want to run the backend on infrastructure you control, Hostwares supports the full open-source Supabase stack. The deployment includes PostgreSQL, Auth, Storage, Realtime and Studio.

Final Thoughts

Nuxt and Supabase cover two different parts of a full-stack application. Nuxt provides the application framework. Supabase provides database, authentication, storage and other backend services. Together they can provide a straightforward foundation for modern web applications. Explore Hostwares
