Can you manage hosting from Claude Code via MCP?
Yes: run one claude mcp add command with your Hostwares API key and Claude Code gains tools to deploy a repository, read logs, set environment variables, attach a domain, create a database, take a backup and roll back. Anything that costs money returns a price and an approval link first, and the build starts once the invoice is paid; deleting data or erasing a machine asks every time. The same server works in Cursor and any MCP client, and it manages every Hostwares product: sites, databases, dedicated Supabase, Cloud Instances, domains and email.
Step by step
- 1
Create an API key
Dashboard → API Keys: create a key. Keys can be scoped per area (read or write on sites, databases, domains and so on), so a key for a CI job can be narrower than the one in your editor.
- 2
Add the server to Claude Code
One command registers the hosted server. Nothing to install; whoami confirms the key works.
Claude Code
claude mcp add --transport http hostwares https://mcp.hostwares.com \ --header "Authorization: Bearer hwk_your_key_here"Cursor / Claude Desktop (stdio bridge)
{ "mcpServers": { "hostwares": { "command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "hostwares-mcp"], "env": { "HOSTWARES_API_KEY": "hwk_your_key_here" } } } } - 3
Open an approval session, then deploy
Say "start an approval session" so one approval covers the session's actions on your account, invoice creation included. Then, in the project folder: "Deploy this repo to Hostwares as my-app". The deploy tool detects the framework, returns a price and an approval link, and the build starts once the invoice is paid; get_status reports when it is running.
A project that is not on GitHub can be uploaded: create_upload returns a command to run, then deploy with the upload id.
- 4
Run the day-to-day from the chat
"Set DATABASE_URL on my-app and redeploy" (set_env, redeploy_site). "Point app.example.com at my-app" (add_domain, then verify_ssl). "Create a Postgres database for my-app" (create_database, db_connection_info). "Why is my-app returning 502? Check the logs" (diagnose_site, get_logs). "Roll back my-app" (rollback_site).
- 5
Reach the rest of the account
Dedicated Supabase: supabase_status, supabase_logs, supabase_restart. Cloud Instances: instance_power, site_terminal for one shell command per call. Backups: create_backup, list_backups. Billing: check_invoices. CI: configure_pipeline and run_pipeline. Everything is scoped to your own account; another account's resources are not found.
What it costs
- MCP access is part of your account; using your own Claude Code or Cursor model with our tools costs nothing extra.
- What you deploy is billed as usual: a Frontend pack from $1/mo, a managed Postgres from $10/mo, a dedicated Supabase from $5/mo, a Cloud Instance from $2/mo.
App
$1/mo
Starter Frontend pack, 1 vCPU / 1 GB RAM / 10 GB
Database, users and files
$5/mo
Smallest dedicated Supabase pack; several projects fit on one
Questions
Does Claude Code need anything installed?+
No. The server is hosted at mcp.hostwares.com and the one-line command registers it. Clients that only run local commands use the npx hostwares-mcp bridge, which forwards to the same server.
Can the agent spend money without asking?+
No. Hosting is pay-first: a deploy or a new database creates an invoice and nothing is built until you pay it. Deleting data or erasing a machine returns an approval link every time.
Which tools are there?+
Deploy and status (deploy, get_status, get_logs, deployment_history, redeploy_site, rollback_site), configuration (set_env, list_env_vars, set_app_port, add_domain, verify_ssl), databases (create_database, db_query, db_connection_info, create_backup), Supabase and instances (supabase_status, instance_power, site_terminal), and account (whoami, check_invoices, start_approval_session).
Can it reach a server that is not on Hostwares?+
The MCP server manages Hostwares products only. The hw CLI runs on any machine you have a login for and does the same work there.
Does it work in Cursor, Windsurf or Claude Desktop?+
Yes. Any MCP client: use the HTTP server with the Authorization header, or the npx bridge where only stdio servers are supported.
Is the key safe in my editor config?+
Scope it: create a key limited to the areas and the read/write level the editor needs, and revoke it from the API Keys page at any time.
